Filling microfuge tubes with beads is a painful, time consuming task.  Not any more!  OPS Diagnostics now offers pre-filled tubes using our acid washed grinding media.  Each tube contains 325 μl of molecular biology grade beads in a 2 ml screw-cap microfuge tube.  This allows for the homogenization of 650 μl sample, typically microorganisms, while allowing for the required headspace for efficient disruption by vortexing or bead beating.*  Tubes are available with silica beads as well as the higher impacting zirconium beads.

Recommended size applications for Pre-Filled Tubes:

100 μm - Bacteria, sonication additive

200 μm - Bacteria, small yeasts (e.g., Pichia)

400 μm - Yeasts (Saccharomyces)

800 μm - Molds, pollen

Pre-Filled Tubes can be used with the Pulsing Vortex Mixer, GenoGrinder, or HT Homogenizer.

* Work in our laboratory determined that the most efficient homogenization of microbes by bead beating used 1 part beads to 2 parts culture broth.  The total volume of the beads and broth should not exceed half the volume of the tube.  Consequently we fill our tubes with 325 μl of beads so that following the addition of 650 μl sample, the total volume is just under half the volume of the tube.
