The Orbital Shaker is a lower speed
shaker and mixer (25-500 rpm) useful for culturing microbes, washing blots, and
general mixing. It can handle multiple flasks and even accommodate
two tiers.
A good characteristic of the
Orbital Shaker is its lack of vibration and low heat output for this type of
laboratory equipment. This
allows the researcher to place this shaker inside either standard or
cell culture incubators, and effectively convert that incubator into
a shaking incubator. This expands the application of the shaker into
tissue culture arena.

COMMENTARY
Like many laboratories, our space and budget is
limited. When we started to expand our molecular biology services, we
needed a quick method for increasing our capacity to culture cells, grow E.
coli, and generally mix samples
that did not require new laboratory equipment and excessive cost. We were
delighted to discover that this Orbital Shaker could serve as a mixer and be placed inside
one of our current incubators where it effectively transformed the
unit into a shaking incubator. The shaker runs relatively cool and
does not add significant heat to the incubator, thus we were able to
maintain temperature while the orbital shaker was active. We also
applied the shaker to culturing fungi at room temperature and found
it to be effective in that capacity as well. This is a heavy duty,
well built unit that will survive a beating.
